On April 24 (Friday), the Chemistry Department of our school co-organized an interview talk with the Hong Kong Academy of Sciences themed “From Clinical Practice to Scientific Research.” We were honored to welcome Professor Yuen Kwok-yung, Chair Professor of Infectious Diseases at the Faculty of Medicine, The University of Hong Kong.
Professor Yuen shared how his childhood experiences, growing up in an underprivileged family and being influenced by his grandfather, a Chinese medicine practitioner, shaped his path in medicine and research. He explained his transition from clinical work to scientific research, highlighting the importance of observation, compassion, and strong medical knowledge in being a good doctor.
He also recounted his team’s decade-long effort to develop a plant-based moisturizing cream for eczema, encouraging students to persevere in research. During the Q&A session, students asked about the use of AI in medicine and received autographed copies of his autobiography. Many continued their discussions with Professor Yuen after the talk, making the event both inspiring and enriching for all.
