Lunchtime Reading Activities

To promote reading and help students discover the joy found in books, the English Department organised a series of Lunchtime Reading Activities on 25th November 2025 (Tuesday). Held during lunchtime, the activities received an enthusiastic response from students, with long queues forming at each activity station.

The event featured three main activities designed to engage students in fun and interactive ways. In the Reading Puzzle, three English Prefects introduced their chosen books through short write-ups displayed on the screen. Participants received a paper strip containing a statement about one of the books and had to identify the correct title by reading the prefects’ descriptions. They then pieced together the book’s cover puzzle within 60 seconds. The activity sparked much excitement as students raced to complete the challenges before time ran out.

In the Reading Scavenger Hunt, students searched through a selection of books to locate specific details such as the author, publisher, chapter titles, or memorable lines within a 90-second time limit. The activity tested participants’ attentiveness and quick thinking while encouraging them to engage closely with printed texts.

The event concluded with a bonus voting activity, in which students used iPads to vote for the book they would most like to read or re-read among the three featured titles. The digital poll provided a lively discussion platform for sharing reading preferences and recommendations.

The activities were very well received, and many students commented that they discovered books they would like to explore further. The English Department will organize more activities that nurture a lifelong love for reading among students in the second term.

Students’ Reflection

After helping with the English reading activity held by the English department, I learnt to be responsible and help other students. Seeing other students engage in reading inspired me to explore new genres of books. Overall, this activity enhanced my understanding about books.

As a helper in the reading activity, I was pleasantly surprised by the high student turnout. Observing students engage with the reading challenge and seeing their diverse reading paces was enjoyable. The event successfully motivated many students to start reading and continue to participate in many more reading activities, and I’m grateful to have contributed to this positive impact.
