Harriet Newell Noyes, the founder of True Light, would often enlighten young minds with the following saying, "Actions speak louder than words, but when one speaks whilst withholding actions, then surely it would have been better not to speak at all!'

Harriet Newell Noyes was born on 5th March, 1844. In 1868, she first arrived in China as a missionary. She soon noticed the existence of sexual inequality within Chinese society. Thus she was determined to pass on the Christian faith to young Chinese women and hoped to cultivate their minds. In 1871, Harriet Newell Noyes wrote to a women's missionary group, which had just been set up by the American Presbyterian Mission North, in Philadelphia. Hoping to evangelize Chinese women and their families, and to provide training for local female missionaries, she proposed the setting up of a girls' school in China. So True Light was established in Canton in 1872.

Harriet Newell Noyes was an honourable woman of many virtues. She was strong in body, pure in thought and dignified in attitude. She was quiet , amiable, kind, diligent and humorous. She led a simple life. After serving True Light for 50 years, she returned to the United States in 1923 and donated all her savings to True Light.

Harriet Newell Noyes was committed and dedicated to God and True Light. She made an enormous contribution to the education of women in China. Sadly on 16th January, 1924, she passed away in the United States.
